Laser optics exposed to intense laser irradiation can be damaged. The damaged optical element does not work as expected and causes multiple problems. Professional Laser Damage Testing helps to avoid unexpected failures of the optical elements. Testing is available in CW (continuous wave) – Nanosecond – Picosecond – Femtosecond pulse regimes, from IR to UV spectral range in Air or Vacuum. ISO 21254 LIDT tests (1-on-1, S-on-1, Acceptance Test) and functional LIDT tests (R-on-1, raster scan, and others) are available at LIDARIS. Additional testing services such as low-loss absorption measurements, wavefront sensing, thermovision, and total integrated scattering measurements are available on demand.

intensity operation limit) of optical parts such as lenses, mirrors, windows, or similar optical elements with intended use in high-power laser systems. Thus, LIDT testing provides evidence related to the optic’s quality and helps to make important decisions. Testing can be done in CW (continuous wave), nanosecond (NS), picosecond

Typical LIDT testing is limited to short irradiation doses (seconds or minutes). To match real-life application requirements (years of uninterrupted laser operation) much longer testing is needed. Lifetime estimation employs multiple S-on-1 tests at various exposure doses and novel statistical analysis, which enables the prediction of long-term optical fatigue behavior.

ABSORPTION TESTING AT PPM LEVEL WITH PCI

Photothermal Common-path Interferometry (PCI) is probably the most popular option for the characterization of low-loss optical absorptance of dielectric coatings at ppm level. It is a spatially resolved pump-probe technique. The standard measurement pack includes three test procedures: Transverse scan (T-Scan); longitudinal scan (L-scan) through the depth of the transparent sample and Time-scan – absorption is monitored at one site for 10 minutes. Testing is available from IR to UV spectral range.

Typical LIDT testing usually is limited to irradiations lasting only a few seconds or minutes. To match
real-life application requirements (such as years of uninterrupted laser operation) much longer testing
is needed. At LIDARIS we perform extended testing based on the S-on-1 test approach and employ novel statistical analysis techniques to estimate the lifetime of optical components by characterization and prediction of optical fatigue behavior.
